One of the big problems with early foldable phones was how bulky they were, but we've come a long way since then.
As an example, Samsung is apparently working to make its next flagship foldable the thinnest one it's ever built. According to a joint leak including device renders from Android Headlines and Onleaks, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Fold 7 will be just 4.5mm thick when unfolded, and 9.5mm when folded up.
